Charley Crockett
Lonesome Drifter  (Lone Star Rider/Island Records)

Crockett and co-producer Shooter Jennings set themselves the target of bottling “the magic of performance on tape.” Over the course of just 10 days, they cut the record’s 12 tracks live at the legendary Sunset Sounds Studio in LA. “I just brought all of my guys out, and the album made itself. It was live without a lot of overdubs.” Charley continues, “there were no inhibitions. I wasn’t being judged, and I didn’t feel self-conscious. Shooter knew how to cut loose and let this thing unfold.” Musically, the album traces a roadmap through Crockett’s own myriad of influences, tipping a hat to everybody from Waylon Jennings, Bill Withers, Bob Dylan, and Woody Guthrie, drawing on his countless experiences since he first left his native Texas. From the singular vocal performances to the raw and rustic instrumentation to the storytelling, Lonesome Drifter could be his most cohesive body of work to date. (edited from Americana UK review)

Jason Isbell
Foxes in the Snow  (Southeastern Records)

Last October in New York City, Jason Isbell booked five days in Electric Lady Studios and recorded his tenth solo studio album in its entirety. Just voice and acoustic guitar (his 1940 Martin 0-17) from beginning to end, and, by the sound of it, no overdubs. There are 11 new songs here – all of them nigh-on flawless – about love, loneliness, sex, toughness, sobriety, New York, Alabama, more love, words of wisdom, dangerous memories and more. When you take away the buttons and bells and strip a song to its essence, your focus is on this one voice and what it’s telling you – stories of himself, or some other character, or both, with some of the best lyrics around.  (edited from Mojo review)

The Devil Makes Three
Spirits
(New West Records)

Whether it’s the state of the world or personal travails, a lot of people are going through it right now. Finding your way through these challenges isn’t easy; it takes resilience, clarity and a sense of purpose. These are the themes at the core of Spirits, the new LP by The Devil Makes Three and the trio’s first record since the 2018Whereas Chains are Broken is very much rooted in a muscular roots rock and alt-country sound, Spirits features more stripped-down arrangements, wherein the brawn comes in the form of lyrical conviction and heartfelt delivery. The sentiment of seeing the rich get richer while everyone else is forced to struggle anchors the jaunty country of “Half as High.” There aren’t really any straightforward answers or resolutions to life’s challenges, although McBean’s ironic “I Love Doing Drugs” does present one possible option. But as the closing selection “Holding On” indicates, Bernhard and The Devil Makes Three really only see one way forward. (edited from No Depression review)

Americana Music Releases for Feb. 21st

Paul Thorn
Life Is Just A Vapor
  (Perpetual Obscurity Records)

It is no coincidence that Paul Thorn, the son of a Pentecostal preacher, wrote the title song of his new release, Life is Just a Vapor, inspired by a passage in scripture: “For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” (James 4:14.) “I’ve heard that all my life,” Thorn explained. “Now that I’ve grown a little bit, it rings so true. That’s not to say, be sad; it’s to say, live life to the fullest and enjoy it. I don’t believe it’s the end when I die. Do I know what’s over there? No, but I don’t think it’s the end. I’m going to enjoy this one until the next one kicks in.” While Thorn’s storytelling is near genius, perhaps his most remarkable gift is his ability to find common ground with his listeners, meet us where we live, and yet open our minds to new ways of thinking about everyday things.  (edited from American Blues Scene review)

Christina Vane
Hear My Call  (independent)

Growing up in Italy, France, and England, Vane learned guitar and started writing songs as a teenager before becoming enamored with slide guitar one summer in London. After moving to America for university she found herself working at the famous McCabe’s guitar shop in LA, whereupon she expanded her repertoire into fingerpicking guitar and clawhammer banjo. You can hear all those influences in her newest album, Hear My Call. Life on the road figures heavily on a number of cuts, no doubt impacted by the six straight months she spent traveling across the country on her crowd-sourced first tour. For an album that stretches from sizzling blues to twangy bluegrass, the record is surprisingly cohesive.   (edited from Twangville review)

The Delines
Mr. Luck & Mrs. Doom  (El Cortez Records)

The Delines fourth album follows romantic misfits and grifters as they drift across the United States, living out of suitcases and cars, hoping that in the next town or city will be the score that saves them. Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom features 11 new songs penned by novelist and songwriter Willy Vlautin, whose lyrics transport the listener inside the lives of these lost drifters. The record features Amy Boone’s lush, world worn voice, the cinematic production skills of Askew, and the horn and string arrangement of Delines keyboardist and trumpeter, Cory Gray. This is wide screen, CinemaScope, Delines at their best. (from press release)

The War and Treaty
Plus One  (Mercury Nashville)

As the War and Treaty, spouses Michael Trotter, Jr. and Tanya Blount make impassioned soul music that draws on country, R&B, traditional folk, and spirituals, often combining them all. “We see this record as an open invitation to be a part of what we’re doing—it came from wanting to be the hope we believe people need right now, as well as the hope that we need for ourselves,” Tanya shared of the forthcoming album in a statement, with Michael offering, “One of our main intentions with this album is to inspire people to share themselves with others, and open themselves up to the possibility of being loved.”Plus One also boasts a couple of cool collaborations, including a co-write with Miranda Lambert on the song “Love Like Whiskey,” as well as an appearance by Billy Strings on the song “Drink From Me.”

Joe Ely
Love and Freedom
(Rack ‘Em Records)

“To me, Love and Freedom is a reminder of the times we’re living in right now, and I hope it resonates with whoever takes the time to listen,” Joe Ely is quoted as saying about the new album. Ely has also been out of the public eye for an extended period and according to his wife and manager Sharon Ely, Joe has been suffering from some serious health issues lately. “In August 2024, as Joe was actually healing from a bout of pneumonia, he experienced an episode of what seemed like a small stroke … The neurologist looked at Joe’s MRI and diagnosed him with cerebral amyloid angiopathy. We have discovered and unearthed treasures of brilliant recordings. Some are coming together as complete albums. She continues, “Working on his music keeps him but not all the time. This has been great for Joe as we both weave through this journey together in a meaningful way.”  (edited from Saving Country Music)

Miss Tess
Cher Rêve  (Rights Records)

Miss Tess is hard to pin down, it seems she’s a rambler and a gambler in her music. That’s a compliment as there have been so many facets (incarnations?) of her ever since I first heard “I Only Miss You When I’m Stoned” (2012), complete with a sensuous clarinet that presaged later work that embodied a sense of swing and admiration for the great American songbooks of all genres. Not a dilettante by any means, here she brings that sensibility to southern Louisiana where, in Joel Savoy’s studio, she recorded nine songs, with definite Cajun overtones, live in just three days. The songs have an immediacy to them, yet one that feels unhurried in both their substance and delivery. (edited from No Depression review)

Loudon Wainwright III
Loudon Live In London  (The Last Music Company)

Folksinger Loudon Wainwright III has had a colorful and eventful life, professionally and personally. His more than half-century musical career has embraced dozens of studio albums, countless concert tours, and one unlikely hit single, “Dead Skunk (In the Middle of the Road).” To learn more about these achievements and relationships, you don’t need to read the memoir that Wainwright published in 2017; you just need to listen to his music. To a greater extent than most songwriters, Wainwright has mined his own life for his lyrics, writing variously funny and heartbreaking, often first-person songs about his parents, his kids, his romantic entanglements, and more. The 21-track album includes songs from records as old as 1971’s Album II and as new as 2022’s Lifetime Achievement, his latest studio recording. The program also embraces four covers and a bit of new original material. It’s a solo acoustic set, with Wainwright accompanying himself on guitar, ukulele, and harmonica. (edited from Americana Highways review)

Early James
Medium Raw  (Easy Eye Sound)

Early James embraces jagged, moaning blues with a writing style that includes whip-smart wordplay, upended clichés, humor both light and dark.  Instead of a typical studio setup, producer Dan Auerbach felt the album needed to be recorded in an old house, like many of his favorite Arhoolie records. Over 100 years old, the house has plaster on the walls, old wallpaper and big oak floors. They brought in all the recording gear themselves – including an old 50’s Universal Audio tube console which was originally built by FAME Studios’ Rick Hall. The album blends blues, rock and folk with an unfiltered edge, capturing Early James’ soulful storytelling and powerful vocals.

Ringo Starr
Look Up (Lost Highway Records)

This is Ringo’s first solo record in six years, and his first country record in 55 years. Most of the songs of Look Up are written by T Bone Burnett. “I’ve always loved country music,” Starr says. “And when I asked T Bone to write me a song, I didn’t even think at the time that it would be a country song—but of course it was, and it was so beautiful. I had been making EPs at the time and so I thought we would do a country EP—but when he brought me nine songs I knew we had to make an album! And I am so glad we did.” The album features Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Lucius, Larkin Poe, and Alison Krauss.
